What makes a man truly embarrassed?
Man begins to lose the cherished selfhood.
It is not existence itself that makes a man embarrassing. It is self-awareness and the growing consciousness of who he is: Being insatiable, constantly in-need, desperately dependent. What sets a man truly wretched is his detachment from the supplies of his being: God or world.
Man, at first, to protect his ego, denies his own needs and wants. Man craves independence. Man craves self-sufficiency. Man denies connection, either to the world or God. Man craves autonomy over his being, the course of his life, his fate. Man writes his history alone.
Man bars foreign influence. He thinks society is stupid. Until he is forced to understand and come to terms that to address his needs, he ought to flock with people of sense, of wealth, of character. It dawns on him that no man is indeed an island. This, to man, is fucking hell.
Man begins to lose the cherished selfhood.
